第二點，用于計算美國大學(xué)排名的方法與世界大學(xué)所使用的方法不同。世界大學(xué)排名專注于學(xué)校的學(xué)術(shù)研究和聲譽，美國大學(xué)排名著重于本科或研究生的課程。世界大學(xué)的排名更側(cè)重于學(xué)校的研究聲譽，根據(jù)文獻計量指標(biāo)進行評估，如出版物、引文和高度引用的論文，而美國大學(xué)排名不使用任何文獻計量指標(biāo)。

全中國人民都把他認為和寫成美國大學(xué)綜合排名，這完全搞錯了！你們只看到了二級標(biāo)題：綜合類大學(xué)排名National University Ranking，而沒有看一級標(biāo)題是：本科排名Best College Rankings。綜合類大學(xué)排名NationalUniversity Ranking只是美國大學(xué)的本科排名，可不是美國大學(xué)的綜合實力排名！這里不包括研究生教育、博士生教育、博士后教育。US News 根本就沒有美國大學(xué)的綜合排名，只有對綜合類大學(xué)的本科部分的排名 College Ranking。
3. 美國研究生院排名Graduate School Ranking，對不同專業(yè)的研究生院的分別排名，比如工學(xué)院、建筑學(xué)院、教育學(xué)院、藥學(xué)院、醫(yī)學(xué)院、法學(xué)院、商學(xué)院排名等。
美國US News對綜合類大學(xué)的本科部分排名National University Ranking，需要特別強調(diào)的是: US News綜合類大學(xué)的本科排名NationalUniversity Ranking 只評價的是本科教育，他只是對綜合類大學(xué)本科教育的排名，這個排名存在五方面?zhèn)€重大缺陷：
1. 錄取率
(1) 美國公立大學(xué)本科招生在本州的錄取名額投放近70%，本州學(xué)生只付50%學(xué)費，整個本科讀完可節(jié)省10萬美元。所以美國絕大部分學(xué)生首選就讀本州的大學(xué)。因為本州學(xué)生清楚的掌握本州公立大學(xué)的錄取分數(shù)，學(xué)生填報志愿很準，所以公立大學(xué)對本州報考學(xué)生的錄取率高達70%。因而公立大學(xué)全部學(xué)生的錄取率就顯的非常高。
(2) 美國私立大學(xué)無論是本科、碩士、博士都是全名額無差別對美國52個州招生，這樣全美國52個州的學(xué)生都等額申報美國私立大學(xué)，所以申請人數(shù)無疑就多了無數(shù)倍，導(dǎo)致錄取率非常低，排名得分非常高。
2. 校友捐贈
(1) 美國私立大學(xué)主要靠校友捐贈維持學(xué)校運營，少量聯(lián)邦政府撥款。
(2) 美國公立大學(xué)主要靠聯(lián)邦撥款和州政府撥款，美國公立大學(xué)也有較好的校友私人捐款。
(3) US News 排名只把私人捐贈計入評價分數(shù)，而公立大學(xué)每年獲得的巨額聯(lián)邦政府撥款和州政府撥款一份錢也沒有計入評價指標(biāo)。
如此一來，校友捐贈一項評分，公立大學(xué)被嚴重低估，所以造成得分非常低。
3. 研究生教育
本排名沒有將碩士教育，博士教育，博士后教育納入其中。所以本排名根本不代表整個大學(xué)的教育水平。
4. 教師水平
本排名沒有將教師隊伍水平納入評價指標(biāo)，包括: 諾貝爾獎教授數(shù)量，美國院士數(shù)量，全職教授數(shù)量。
5. 學(xué)術(shù)水平
本排名沒有考慮每所大學(xué)的學(xué)術(shù)水平。
以上重大錯誤因素造成公立大學(xué)和私立大學(xué)相比排名靠后30名，50名，100名，200名。從US News全球大學(xué)排名Best Global University Ranking和美國大學(xué)排名NationalUniversity Ranking 兩個排名的對比，很顯然，US News全球大學(xué)排名 Best Global University Ranking 才是真正是美國大學(xué)的綜合實力排名。

1.沒有人說的college就代表本科排名，即使指標(biāo)里本科比重較大也不代表綜合性大學(xué)排名就是本科教育排名，否則為什么把這些綜合性大學(xué)和文理學(xué)院分開排呢？就是因為文理學(xué)院更注重本科教育從而影響排名的公平性。退一步講，難道本科教育不應(yīng)該是大學(xué)的重要組成部分嗎？好的生源就是好的環(huán)境。本科即第一學(xué)歷的好壞往往是別人第一眼先看的。

First, none of the data from the Best Colleges and Best Graduate Schools rankings are used in the Best Global Universities rankings, and vice versa. The Best Global Universities rankings are powered by Thomson Reuters InCitesTM research analytics solutions, whereas U.S. News collects all of its own data for the Best Colleges and Best Graduate Schools rankings.
Second, the methodology​ used to compute the ​Best Global Universities rankings is ​different in many key ways from the methodologies used for Best Colleges and Best Graduate Schools, because the global rankings focus specifically on schools' academic research and reputation overall and not their separate undergraduate or graduate programs.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
It's true that ​all of these rankings use peer reputation surveys. However, the survey process used to compile and calculate peer assessment rankings in the Best Global Universities rankings relies heavily on evaluating institutions' research performance, as measured by bibliometric indicators such as publications, citations and highly cited papers. The U.S. NewsBest Colleges and Best Graduate Schools rankings do not use any bibliometric indicators.
Third, the Best Global Universities rankings ​contain 21 subject area rankings in fields such as clinical medicine, computer science and economics and business. The subject rankings measure a school’s global position in the field using data on global and regional reputation and academic research performance in that field, using citations and publications.
This is very different from our Best Graduate Schools rankings, where we rank medical, education, engineering, law and business schools, as well as Ph.D. programs in science and the social sciences and humanities​. The Best Global Universities subject rankingsare not of academic majors, departments or specific schools at universities, such as business schools or medical schools.
